Diversity

I had to answer a question about diversity several months ago on an application for a leadership program.  I didn't get accepted to the program, but I was quite proud of a paragraph I wrote for that application, and I wanted to share.

As one half of a mixed-race marriage, and as the father of two mixed-race children, I also have a unique perspective on diversity. We are all confronted by difference in our interactions with each other, but the most important thing is how we see and act upon that difference. I choose to see difference as an opportunity to learn, to listen, and to celebrate. My wife and I are striving to show our children how their beautifully unique racial identity is to be celebrated as an opportunity to explore their past and find meaning in their future community.
